About BCG
BCG
vaccination is given to protect against Tuberculosis. BCG stands for
Bacille Calmette Guerin.
Tuberculosis is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
BCG is a weakened form of bacteria called Mycobacterium bovis, which is closely
related to Mycobacterium tuberculosis, an agent responsible to cause the
tuberculosis.
BCG vaccine needs to be administered at birth intradermally near the
deltoid region as per Universal Immunization Schedule.
BCG Vaccine is freeze dried powder and comes in a glass vial sealed under
vacuum. This powder should be diluted with normal saline and injected within hours. The inappropriate opening
of the BCG glass ampoule & dilution might lead to adverse effect in
children.
A single 0.05 ml pediatric dose contains 0.45mg Sodium chloride & water for
injection to 0.05 ml.
The diluent should not be frozen but it needs to be cooled between +2°C and
+8°C before the reconstitution.
The BCG vaccine after the reconstitution it has to be administered immediately
or else it has to be kept at 2°C- 8°C but not more than 6 hours.
Do not use diluents from vaccines or from the other manufacturers.
Distilled water lacks the sodium chloride component to have good dilution.
Therefore, normal saline is diluent used for the reconstitution of BCG vaccine.
