About Serum Ferritin Test

Serum Ferritin is the best test to detect iron deficiency in a client.
It measures the amount of ferritin in the serum.
The ferritin test is ordered when the hemoglobin test and hematocrit indicate that the hemoglobin is less and the RBCs are paler and smaller than usual.

Principle: Ferritin is a major iron protein and is the primary form of iron stored in the cells. A very small amount of ferritin is released and circulate in the body. So, assessing ferritin is an indirect way to measure iron stored in a body.
The iron must be absorbed in the body that one takes as a supplement or with foodstuffs. Normally iron incorporated in the body with hemoglobin of RBCs and other is stored as ferritin or as hemosiderin along with other proteins like myoglobin.
Ferritin and hemosiderin are present mainly in liver and bone marrow, skeletal muscles, and spleen.

Indications:
Low level of ferritin:
when the level of iron drops in a body, ferritin level drops. The reason for this drop in level may be because of:
- When food is deficient in iron
- The body is not absorbing iron like in celiac disease
- Body has increased demand like in pregnancy, chronic blood loss as in colon cancer, or during childhood.

High level of ferritin:
There may be an elevated level of ferritin in the body when the iron is in excess like in hereditary hemochromatosis. In such cases, the intestine absorbs iron in a high amount which accumulates in the body. The high iron content gets deposited in joints, heart, liver, and testicles in men. The organs with iron deposit dysfunction. Ferritin levels can increase during inflammation in the body.

Advantages:

- It can be done at any time of the day without any special preparation.
- The test sample is taken from vein-like any other routine blood test.
- It is an indirect way to know about the store of iron in the body and is often ordered in routine.
- Ferrous sulphate is a type of iron that is used to treat iron deficiency and it is also used to test drugs in pharmacology.
- A serum iron test is done to measure the total iron-binding capacity in the blood.
- Hemoglobin test analyses the hemoglobin content of red blood cells.
